Buying a new server, need help with order

  • Hope this is the right place

Got so fed up with the present host, so I found a new dedicated server package, checked out the host etc.
I will be running latest version of VB always, and VBA CMPS, with some plugins, but that will be it.

This is what I got, about all I can afford. This is a managed server as well, I need my hand held sometimes. :)

    Processor: AMD Barton 3000
    RAM: 1024gb
    Primary Hard Drive: 80GB IDE
    Bandwidth: 1000 gb
    Port: 10 mbps
    Operating System: CentOS 3.4
    Control Panel: CPanel w/ Fantastico

First off, is there any suggestions on how I can improve this. I don't have a lot of money, but if there's something I can add that's affordable that would help, appreicate it.

Medium size website, Maximum I have ever had was 250 gig bandwidth, just over 3 million page views in a month, but average is now a lot lower (thanks to the host)

I also am looking at security on the server, there's a nice package for a pretty good price...

Installation and configuration of Firewall (IPtables)
Check for rootkits on the server
    Hardening of /tmp directory
    Watchmysql - MySQL monitor
    Extended Binary Hardening
    Phpsysinfo
    Version checker
    PAM resource limiting
    Disabling Telnet access
    Formail checker
    Tweak MySQL
    Install & configure Portscanner

Is it worth the cost? About 40 dollars one time.

Pretty new to this, so suggestions are greatly appreicated

  • how was the database messed up, i could possibly see if it's repairable if you want ?

  • Thank you, I think that would be for the best as well. My present host has totally fubared the database, and haven't fixed it in 24 hours. Man, do I have a post to write about it soon as i get my site moved...

Just concerned if it was enough memory for roughly 2.5 million page views, but then can always upgrade.

There are other ways to further secure a server, but that list is a good start and is worth paying $40 for - especially if you do not know how to do these things yourself.

  • It is worth securing the server yes

  • Good luck, it's totally shot. The "hodst" (and I say that lightly) can't even get the backup in. If you want to try, I would appreicate it.

    Optimise/properties gives error 144
Repair sometimes gives errors (a bit better than before)
Backup just won't work, I get the php error file

The host said it's pooched, by my email works at least. These guys, I've had to tell them what to do on just about everything.
I will send a PM, hope maybe you can at least do something.

  • providing info asked at http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=70117 would be helpful also check web host support forum if they have one for some user input as to what to tweak

  • err, okay, I guess I would have to buy the server then to provide all that info. They run VB as well, so don't expect it to be a problem

I really just wanted to know if what I ordered as a server before I reinstalled VB was good enough.
